What are the principles of ethics in medical practice?
autonomy, non maleficence, beneficence, justice, respect for human dignity
What is autonomy?
freedom to make your own decisions, informed consent, no coercion, manipulation or deceit in making decisions
What is non maleficence?
minimise harm and make sure harm is proportional to intended benefits
What is beneficence?
do good, promote health and well being, act in the patients best interest
What is justice?
treat all cases alike, dont make decisions based on feelings or opinions, allocate scarce resources fairly
What is respect for human dignity?
treat others as you would like to be treated
What is the harm principle?
the only reason you can violate someones liberty is if they are going to harm someone else
