Ethical issues in the design and conduct of psychological psychological studies
-Conflict between the right to participants and the research needing the results
informed consent
-participants will be aware of the aims, procedures, the right to withdraw, and how the data will be used (could be given retrospectively, so after study)
deception
deliberately with holding information or misleading participants, this can only be justified if it doesn’t cause distress
protection from harm
-participants should not be placed at more risk than their everyday lives so they should be protected from physical and psychological harm
Privacy and confidentiality
-privacy is the right to control information and confidentiality is having the right to have a personal data protected under the data protection act
how do you deal with the issue of informed consent
-participants can have a consent form and if they’re under 16 a parent or guardian must sign it
How do you deal with the ethical issue of deception and protection from harm
-Give a full debrief at the end of the study and tell them that they have the right to withdraw the data and counselling can be offered
how do you deal with the issue of privacy and confidentiality
-Record no personal details and refer to participants by number or letter instead of the names

-participants are treated with respect and consideration and this is implemented into research institutions which do cost-benefit analysis to see if the research is ethically acceptable
