Esters Flashcards
Preparation of Esters
- Alcohol with carboxylic acid
- Alcohol with acyl chloride
Alcohol with carboxylic acid
Type of reaction: esterification, condensation, dehydration
Condition: heat under reflux, sulfuric acid catalyst
alcohol + carboxylic acid ⇌ ester + water
Alcohol with acyl chloride
Type of reaction: esterification, addition-elimination, condensation
Condition: mix at room temperature
alcohol + acyl chloride –> ester + HCl
Hydrolysis with acid
Condition: heat under reflux
ester + acid ⇌ carboxylic acid + alcohol
Hydrolysis with alkali
Condition: heat under reflux
ester + alkali –> carboxylic acid anion + alcohol
carboxylic acid anion + H+ (excess strong acid) –> carboxylic acid
Transesterification with acid
replaces acid part
Transesterification with alcohol
replaces alcohol part
Polyester
monomers with same group on each side –> polyester
