Cuban Missile Crisis
(1962) U.S. enforced a naval blockade and engaged in intense negotiations with the USSR leading to USSR removing Cuban Missiles and America secretly removing Turkey Missiles.
SALT 1
(1972) [Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty] A Treaty that limited anti-ballistic Missiles systems (ABM) and capped nuclear weapons established at the Moscow Conference.
Mutual Assured Destruction (MAD)
Superpowers maintained large nuclear arsenals making the consequences of Cold War escalation too dire for either side to risk.
Nuclear Test Ban Treaty
(1963) It prohibited nuclear weapons tests in the atmosphere, outer space, and underwater, although underground tests were still permitted. First major agreement between the super powers.
Nixon Relations with China
(1972) President Nixon pursued good relations with the Peoples Republic of China. He took a short trip China and him and Mao agreed on the Shanghai Communique, altering the triangle of power.
Six Day War
(1967) Tensions between Israel and Arab escalated into war. Israel gained superiority and strengthened ties with the US as they became direct opposition to USSR back Arab states.
Ostpolitik
(1969) Normalization of relations between the Federal Republic of Germany and Eastern Germany.
Overview of Vietnam War
(1955) Long war where the US initially entered fearing the domino effect. It was a proxy war meaning the US backed Diem initially with the South and the USSR backed the North under Ho Chi Min.
Tet Offensive
(1968) Attack carried out by North Vietnam that ultimately showed US’s weakness and decreased public support further, encouraging detente.
Vietnamization
(1968) A program designed to shift the responsibility of the war from the U.S. to the South Vietnamese.
