Esophagram/Gastrography Flashcards
An Esophagography is used to evaluate what?
Functional and structural alterations of the esophagus
What are some indications for performing a barium swallow for an esophagography?
Suspended rupture, stricture, regurgitation, foreign body, mass, megaesophagus, trachea-esophageal fistula, esophageal dysfunction
What contrast agents are used for Esophagography?
Barium sulfate paste and liquid 60% and Barium sulfate mixed with canned food
What change in procedure may be done if a rupture is suspected?
use water-soluble iodine rather than barium
What supplies are needed for an Esophagography?
syringes for barium, canned food, contrast agent, kidney pan for contrast agent, bucket of soapy water, rags, mouth gag or speculum
What 2 views are taken for prelims for an Esophagography?
Lateral and VD
What items are evaluated with the survey radiographs for Esophagography?
Thoracic and cervical areas
What is the fasting process for an Esophagography?
fast for 12 hours and repeat survey radiographs or fast for 12 hours before performing study
How is barium administered?
via buccal pouch with a 10-20ml syringe or tube
How much barium is administered?
1-5ml
What are the minimum amount of views taken for an Esophagography?
2
A complete Esophagography study may include what views?
Right and left lateral, VD, Right and Left VD oblique
What is the dosage for Acepromazine?
0.02mg/lb
A Gastrography is helpful in determining what?
Position, size, shape, morphology of the stomach
What are some indications for performing a gastrogram?
Gastric masses, ulcerations, radiolucent foreign bodies, outflow obstruction
What are some signs the may lead a veterinarian to request a Gastrography?
acute or chronic vomiting, blood in the vomit, cranial abdomen pain, not eating, not acting well
What are the 3 different contrast studies of the stomach that can be performed?
positive, negative, double
What is the most diagnostic examination of the gastric mucosal lining?
double-contrast gastrogram
Radiopaque iodine may be used instead of barium if what problem is suspected?
perforation
Paralysis of the stomach should not be done if a patient has what disease?
diabetes
What contrast agents are used for a double contrast study?
barium sulfate and air
What is the dosage for air and carbon dioxide?
3-5ml/lb
What is the dosage for Carbonated beverages?
30-60ml
What is the dosage for effervescent granules or tablets?
enough to produce 3-5ml/lb
What is the dosage for barium sulfate 60% for small dogs?
5ml/lb
What is the dosage for barium sulfate 60% for large dogs?
3ml/lb
What is the dosage for water-soluble organic iodide solution?
3-5ml/lb
What is the dosage for barium sulfate suspension 60% for a patient that weighs less than 17 lbs?
1.5ml/lb
What is the dosage for barium sulfate suspension 60% for a patient that weighs 17-88 lbs?
1ml/lb
What is the dosage for barium sulfate suspension 60% for a patient that weighs more than 88 lbs?
0.7ml/lb
What is the dosage for air when it is used for a double contrast gastrogram?
5-10ml/lb
What supplies are needed for a Gastrogography study?
orogastric tube, two 5cc syringes, mouth speculum, 3-way valve, large syringes(10-60ml) full of contrast agent, calculated dose of contrast agent, kidney pan, bucket of soapy water, cloth rags
How long does a patient need to be fasted before a gastrogram is performed?
24 hours
How long do you need to wait after administering acepromazine before taking the preliminary x-rays for gastrograms?
10-20 minutes
What views are taken for preliminary x-rays for gastrograms?
VD and right lateral
What is determined by the gastrogram survey radiographs?
stomach should appear empty
What 6 items MUST be included on the x-ray label?
Clinic, owner, patient, L or R for the laterals, R and L side for the VD, date
What additional label is needed on the gastrogram?
sequence of x-rays
What is the preferred method for delivering the contrast agent to the patient?
orally or through stomach tube
When performing a double contrast study, which contrast is administered first?
air
How can you determine the correct placement of the stomach tube?
palpate neck- should feel 2 tubes
After the barium is administered via the stomach, what 2 things are done before removing the tube?
follow with water and then air, kink and pinch tube
