what occurs during trust vs mistrust?
during this stage the child is completely dependent on the parent….the child is learning if they can trust adults for their needs
what happens if the child fails to develop trust in trust vs mistrust?
they wont trust their parents, paranoia of the world, depression, rejection, socially isolated
what are some examples of how a child will develop trust?
they are feed when needed, comforts when crying, and provides a safe home
what are some examples of how a child will develop mistrust?
when they cry no one comes, the child goes hungry, unsafe surroundings
what is the age range for trust vs mistrust?
birth to 1 year
what is autonomy vs shame/doubt?
during this stage the child begins to want to do things on their own
what can a parent do to help with autonomy?
let the child pick out their clothes, toilet training, letting the child pick their snakcs
what should parents not do that could lead to shame/doubt?
rejecting the childs idea, not allowing then child to make choices themselves, or not being patient with the child
what happens if the child does not learn autonomy but learns shame/doubt?
this puts the child at risk of developing depression, anxiety, eating disorders, low self esteem, and a perceived lack of control in their lives
what age is autonomy vs shame/doubt?
1-3 years
what is initiative mean in initiative vs guilt?
initiative is the drive to try new things as a child while not being afraid of failure
what does guilt mean in initiative vs guilt?
the fear of failing or not being good at a new task
how can a parent encourage initiative in a child?
encourage them to try things and when they fail tell them that its okay and they can try again
What can a parent do that reinforces guilt?
getting frustrated when they can do things or saying that they are bad at something
what is the age for initiative vs guilt?
