Q

What is the MOA of PDE-5 inbibitors? What is the drug?

A

NO released from nerve endings and endothelial cells binds to receptors on the smooth muscle of the corpus cavernosum and causes relaxation of smooth muslce, allowing engorgement. This process is reversed by PDE-5 and the drug SILDENAFIL inhibits the binding.

Q

What is the MOA and administration of Biophonates? What is the drug?

A

Alendronate -
inhibit otsteoclastic activity and decrease bone turnover & reabsorption. They have been shown to improve bone mass in established osteoporosis; also used in pagets disease.

Must be taken with a full glass of water. Patient should remain upright for one hour.

Q

What is the MOA and special action of Calcitonin?

A

calcitonin is normally produced in the body. It regulates calcium levels by inhibiting osteoclastic activiy. must be administered SC or by nasal spray. Calcitonin has some analgesic action, which may be of benefit to patients w Frx.

Q

What is the MOA of SERMS and what is the drug?

selective estrogen receptor modulators

A

Raloxifene -
estrogen agonist on bone and an antagonist in both the breast and usterus. it reduces the incidence of vertebral Frx w o increasing the incidence of breast of uterine cancer. not as effective as estrogen.
