Electrolyte abnormalities in Addison’s
Hyperkalemia
Hyponatremia
Hypercalcemia
Hypochloremia
Addison’s disease
Hypoadrenocorticism
Deficiency in production of aldosterone, cortisol, or both in the adrenal glands
Most common cause of primary Addison’s
Immune-mediated destruction of the adrenal glands
Iatrogenic primary Addison’s
Adrenal cortex is destroyed by mitotane
Secondary Addison’s
Decreased production of ACTH by the pituitary gland
Causes glucocorticoid (cortisol) deficiency only
Iatrogenic secondary Addison’s
Caused by a sudden withdrawal of exogenous high-dose or long-term glucocorticoid therapy
Function of mineralocorticoids (aldosterone)
Promotes sodium and chloride reabsorption in the kidneys
