Equlibria Flashcards
What does the term “ reversible reaction atequilbrium” mean?
The forward and reverse reachons are occurring simultaneously and the conc. Of both the reactants and products remain constant.
What does le chatelier’s principle state
If an external condition is changed the equilibrium will shift to oppose the change
Explain the effect of temp on equilibrium
Increasing temp equilibrium WW move to the endothermic side to reduce temperature by absorbing heat
Decreasing temp, equilibrium moves to exothermic side to increase temp by releasing heat
Effect of pressure on equilibrium
Increasing pressure will cause the equilibrium to shift to side with lower moles of gas
Decreasing pressure will cause the equilibrium to shift to side with more moles of gas
What happens if number of moles of gas is the same on both sides
N o effect
Effect of concentration on equilibrium
Causes equubriumto move to forward direction, moves towards right giving higher yield
Effect of catalyst
No effect, speeds up rate at which equilibrium is formed
Haber process
Explain conditions
Low temp = good yield/slow ra
High pressure - good yield high rate however high pressure leads to high energy costs
methanol production from co
Equation?
Explain conditions
Co + 2h2 ——-> Ch3oh
Temp 400°C, low gives good yield but slow rate
High pressure high energy costs
- ethene to produce ethanol *
Equation?
Explain conditions
Ch2 = ch2 +h2o ——> CH3CH2OH
Temp 300°C, low gives good yield but slow rate
Nigh pressure, nig energy cost
Nigh pressure also leads to unwanted paymerisahan
Catalyst is conc H3P04
Define carbon
Process on which net carbon dioxide emission is zero.i
What does KC mean
Equilibrium constant
Products : reactants
Larger kc….
Greater amount of products
What does kc change with
Temp
Effect of temp on KC
Goes smaller if temp is increased
