The equipment required for IFR Flight - “GRABCARD”

In addition to all the equipment required for VFR Day and Night Flight.
G - Generator/alternator
R - Radios (two way and navigational equipment appropriate for the ground facilities to be used)
A - Altimeter (sensitive) adjustable for barometric pressure
B - Ball (slip-skid indicator, which is part of your turn coordinator)
C - Clock (shows hours minutes and seconds and installed as part of aircraft equipment)
A - Attitude indicator
R - Rate of turn indicator
D - Directional gyro (Heading indicator)
VFR Day Flights - “A TOMATO FLAMES”
A - Altimeter
T - Tachometer for each engine.
O - Oil temp indicator for each engine
M - Manifold pressure gauge for each altitude engine
A - Airspeed indicator
T - Temperature gauge for each liquid cooled engine
O - Oil Pressure gauge for each engine
F - Fuel quantity gauge for each tank
L - Landing gear position lights (if retractable gear)
A - Anti-collision lights (aircraft certificated after March 11, 1996)
M - Magnetic direction indicator
E - ELT, if required by §91.207
S - Safety belts / Shoulder harnesses

How often do you need an Annual inspection?
Every 12 calendar months. FAR 91.409(a)
How often do you need to inspect the altimeter and pitot/static systems?
Every 24 months. FAR 91.411
How often must you check the VORs?
Every 30 days.
When is a transponder required to be installed in the aircraft?
- Above 10,000’ except when below 2500’ AGL
- Inside class B umbrella
- Inside or above class C airspace to 10,000’

How do you check the VORs?
- Set both VORs to the same ground station, and check the heading for +-4 degrees of variation.
- Fly over a known VOR check point and verify the radial is within +-6 degrees of the published radial.
- VOT Tune the VOR to the VOT frequency, set the radial to 0 degrees, and check the deflection is less than +-4 degrees.

When is a transponder recommended?
On, and in mode C always. Both on the ground and in the air. AIM 4-1-20
When must the ELT battery be replaced?
After 1 hour of use or when it has less than 50% of it’s useful life remaining. FAR 91.207(c)
How often must you check the ELT?
Every 12 calendar months, FAR 91.207(d)
