Equipment Maintenance and Calibration 1% Flashcards
Any equipment with a ________you should use all day without recharging you between use
rechargeable battery
Why shouldn’t rechargeable batteries be charged between each use?
Because rechargeable batteries have a memory and if you constantly recharge the battery it never will develop much of a memory.
You should keep a record book of your ________(can be as simple as a spiral notebook)
equipment maintenance and calibration checks(should include serial number of the equipment because equipment gets moved from room to room)
____instruments when not in use.
Cover or store(in a container) and turn off
Why is it important to cover or store instruments?
Because many of the instruments have mirrors and they are dust magnets.
Anything that makes contact with a patient should be….
cleaned, disinfected, or sterilize depending on how it comes into contact with the pt.
Equipment that is painted metal, plastic, or vinyl should be…
dusted with a soft cloth
dry cloth or with spray cleaner(if spray cleaner, spray on cloth not instrument) and use all solutions sparingly
Crevices can be cleaned with ….
canned air or cotton tip applicators
Why must you not tilt canned air?
Because a cold moist liquid will come out instead of air and this will make plastics milky white
Why is it important to turn equipment off in between use?
Because they get hot and they need to cool down
When changing bulbs…..
Turn off equipment, unplug, and wait for bulb to cool, handle it with a bulb jacket or tissue.
If bulbs have corrosion….
unplug equipment and scrape off with eraser or file, then blow it out.
Why should you not touch the bulbs?
because oil from fingers get on it and shorten the life of the bulb and create shadows in the illumination field and it also protects you in case the bulb breaks
Some bulbs don’t blow they instead _________
diminish in illumination
Some bulbs can be rotated ____degrees to extend their life
(The Goldman perimeter is one that has a bulb that should be rotated periodically)
180
If you have a shadow or decrease in you illumination field for projector you should…..
-check the bulb(may be over heated, may not be rotated properly, may need replaced, contact may be corroded)
-maybe housing mirror is out of alignment
-maybe the lens or optics in it need cleaned
The housing mirror in the projector is adjacent to the ____and is easy to knock out of position
bulb
What is the formula for calibrating a projector?
RF distance in ft. to screen(the distance from pt eye to the mirror to the silver screen behind them) x 4.5mm=height of 20/200 letter in mm on reflecting screen
Other than formula what can be used to calibrate a projector and how is it done?
“a chart bracket”
( a piece of paper that you can get from the equipment manufacturer)
first measure RF in feet, then take the chart bracket and hold on the silver screen, a second person is at the projector moving the projector tube in and out to change the size of the 20/200 letter and to change the focus of it. If RF is 16’ your 20/200 letter should be the size of the preprinted E. If RF is 14’ yours 20/200 should be the size of the bracket just above the number 14
Calibrating projector:
20’ chart should be ____from pt(infinity)
10’ chart should be ___from pt
20’
10’
Calibrating a projector;
If room is not 20’ then you use 2___surface mirrors or a screen
front
Calibrating a projector:
Measure distance between pt and ______
reflecting screen
What should you clean projector slide with?
soft dry cloth
(do not touch, never use any liquid)
Projector slides have___glass plates with the symbols between them
2
If you use liquid on the projector slides it will….
distort and ruin the symbols
We use ___surface mirrors to check VA because they reflect 100% of the light.
front
Front surface mirrors are called this because the ….
mirror is literally on the front
Frequent wiping will____the reflectivity so you only clean them when they are ______
erode
visibly dirty
What do you clean front surface mirrors with?
canned air, a camel hair brush, or a 1:4 soln of ether dragged across a lint free cloth.
How can you tell if a mirror is a front surface mirror?
Pencil tip touches its reflection
How can you tell if a mirror is a back surface mirror?
It will show some space between the pencil and its reflection
How do you clean back surface mirrors
any household cleaner(just like mirrors at home)
Frequent rubbing or chemicals can on trial lenses will…
cause the painted numbers to rub off
How should you clean trial lenses?
With wens wipes or lint free cloth or glass cleaner
You should keep trial frames covered to keep them__
dust free
Be careful not to drop or jar trial frames because they can…
come out of alignment easily.
What should you use to clean trial frames?
alcohol or damp cloth
Cross cylinders should be cleaned with…..
Damp cloth
Vigorous rubbing on the cross cylinder can cause ….
Harsh cleaners can…
loosened lenses and rotate lens
rub off dots.
____are special lenses that have and antireflective coating on them
bloomed lenses
Phoropter lenses are ___
bloomed
How do you clean bloomed lenses (phoropter lenses?
with 100% ethyl or methyl alcohol on lens wipe
(never wipe dry)
Glass lenses lenses should be cleaned with
glass cleaner
Plastic should be cleaned with
contact lens cleaner
Most prism bars or loose prislms are made of ____
acrylic
What should you clean prism bar or loose prism with?
soft lint free cloth
(keep them in a case)
