Q

In regards to EIA, where is it most common. What is the surveillance program? Any vx, tx?

A

AB and SK most common.
No well-established surveillance program - horses tested ‘voluntarily’ local stables/show grounds may require it
neg coggins req to leave CAD and return, coggins good for 6mo from date of collection
no vx, no cure

Q

When a horse is positive for EIA, what happens?

A

Immediate quarantine of facility, watch for petechia/ecchymosis
ELISA or AGID (coggin’s test)
all horses on property including those there in the previous 30 days are also traced and tested
if pos, horse is culled
owners may be compensated

Q

How do you test for coggins?

A

blood collected in red top and submitted with form
An ELISA may be run first -> faster, detects antibodies earlier but is more sensitive = more false positives
therefore, all pos confirmed with coggin’s test (AGID test)
