What is lice in cows? What ages does it affect? Symptoms? Types of lice and treatments?
all ages and rpoducting in high stocking density (feedlots), stress, poor nutrition
symptoms - pruritus, constant grooming (causes trichobezoars), alopecia, decreased milk prod, weight loss
treatment: biting (permethrin) and sucking (avermectins) lice and back rubs (oil, powder)
What is dermatophytosis in cows?
ring worm, fungal infection
symptoms include pruritis, round areas of hyperkeratosis, alopecia around eyes and face like “goggles”
ZOONOTIC
tx w/ benign neglect, topical treatment w/ anti-fungals and fluoride toothpaste
What is squamous cell carcinoma in cows?
cancer eye
mature cattle lacking pigment around eyes (herefords, holsteins, simentals)
symptoms include mild blepharospasm, epiphora, ulcerates mass (nictating membrane, conjunctiva, eyelids)
How do you trat squamous cel carcinoma? prevention? Px? What if its invasive?
tx w/ surgical excision or eye enucleation if more extensive - curative in early cases
cull if invasive bc its metastatic
px dependant on size and invasiveness
prevention to breed cattle with pigmented skin around eyes
WHat is papillomatosis in cows? tx? Px? prevention?
warts
bovine papilloma virus, contracta via direct/indirect contact (such as feeders, waters)
in yg cattle
symptoms are sm hyperkeratotic skin tumors around head, neck and penis
Tx w/ benign neglect, survival removal on penis
Px excellent
prevent w/ vx and limit contact of naive animals with affected animals
How is Lice and ringworm similar vs different?
Ring = fungal infection, hyperkeratosis w/ alopecia, zoonotic, benign neglect
Lice = stress, nutrition, stocking density, constant grooming, decreased milk prod and weight loss
