What is clostridial myositis?

A

blackleg
gets ingested, crosses GIT barrier into blood and is deposited into skeletal tissue. Lies dorman than spontaneously sporulates
crepitus when hide is pressed
rapid decomposition
muscle tissue becomes black-red has gass
tx is difficult
symp: depression, non-weight bearing lamness, death
px - grace
prevention vx

What is septic arthritis?

A
  1. primary to trauma
  2. 2nd to pneumonia - mycoplasma bovis
    symp: marked to non-weight bearing lamness and joint swelling
    dx via culture and PCR
    Tx w Ab therapy but limited bc of extra label use, withdrawal times, impaired Ab penetration, inherent multidrug resistance
    px - poor
    prevent by prophylactic Ab on arrival
    vx for mycoplasma bovis

What is interdigital phlegmon

A

Foot rot
mostly cattle grazed at wet pasture/stubble fields like beef cows and breeding bulls
from fusibacterium necrophorum which is a mixed bact infection that causes abrasions and cellulitis
symp is nonweight bearing, swollen distal limb btw dew claws
tx w/ penicillin
px - excellent
prevent by avoid grazing stubble fields/wet pasture and foot baths
