Three layers of the hoof wall

A

Stratum externum: thin layer of horn originating from periople

Stratum medium: main supportive element, solid rods of horn orientated parallel to outer hoof surface, produced by stratum basale and spinosum at level of coronary groove

Stratum internum: hundres of keratinized primary laminae, 1-200 secondary laminae extend from them, interdigitate with laminae extending from corium
