Digastricus
runs from occipital area to ventral part of body of mandible
Function: opens jaw
Nerve: trigeminal nerve
Temporalis
temporal bone to coronoid process of mandible
Function: closes jaw
Nerve: trigeminal nerve
Masseter
zygomatic arch to masseteric fossa (depression on ramus of mandible)
Function: closes jaw
Nerve: trigeminal nerve
Pterygoid
pterygopalatine fossa (below orbial fossa on skull) to ramus and angular process of mandible
Function: closes jaw
Nerve: trigeminal nerve
Sternohyoideus
sternum to basihyoid (paired muscle meets ventrally, important for tracheostomy)
Function: retracts tongue
Intrinsic muscles of tongue
Run as bundles of fibers longitudinally, transversely, and vertically to give great mobility to tongue
Styloglossus
extrinsic tongue muscle, stylohyoid bone to middle of tongue
Function: retract and elevate tongue
Nerve: hypoglossal nerve
Hyoglossus
extrinsic tongue muscle, thyro- and basihyoid to root of tongue
Function: retract and depress tongue
Nerve: hypoglossal nerve
Genioglossus
extrinsic tongue muscle, mandibular symphysis to middle of tongue
Function: protrude and retract apex of tongue
Nerve: hypoglossal
