Canine Limbs- Blood Vessels Flashcards
What are the origin points for the L and R subclavian arteries?
L: aorta
R: brachiocephalic trunk (which branches off the aorta)
Where does the axillary artery come from?
Branch of the subclavian artery
Where does the axillary artery become the brachial artery?
Mid-humerus on the medial side
What branches does the brachial artery give off and what do they supply?
Deep brachial: supplies the large mass of the triceps
Collateral ulnar: caudal antebrachium
Superficial brachial: cranial antebrachium
Where does the brachial artery become the median artery?
Medial antebrachium, runs with the median nerve under the flexor carpi radialis muscle
What vein and nerve does the superficial brachial artery run subcutaneously to?
Cephalic vein and superficial radial nerve
What supplies blood to the palmar aspect of the paw?
Palmar metacarpal and palmar common digital arteries
What is the only large superficial vein in the forelimb?
Cephalic vein
Where does the cephalic vein begin on the leg? What path does it take?
Begins on medial and palmar surface of carpus
Runs up the cranial antebrachium, following cranial surface and edge of extensor carpi radialis up to axillary area
What vein joins the cephalic at the distal antebrachium?
Accessory cephalic, runs from dorsum of paw as dorsal common digital veins
What vein joins the cephalic and brachial veins at the flexor angle of the elbow?
Median cubital vein
What veins merge and enter the jugular vein?
cephalic and axillobrachial veins
What is the drainage sequence for the deeper veins of the forelimb?
Smaller veins+common interosseous vein>brachial vein>axillary>subclavian>external jugular>brachiocephalic>jugular
What is the principal arterial supply for the hindlimb?
External iliac artery
What does the external iliac become when it leaves the abdomen?
Femoral artery
