Epithelium Flashcards
Simple, squamous, epithelium function
Rapid, diffusion, filtration, and some secretion in serous membrane
Simple squamous epithelium location
Extremely delicate and found only in protected regions where moist surface reduce friction and abrasion - air sacks, lungs lining, lumen of blood vessels, serous membranes of body cavities
Stratified, squamous, epithelium function
Adapted to protect underlying tissues from damage from activities that are abrasive and caused friction
Stratified, squamous, epithelium location
Keratinized: epidermis of skin
Non-keratinized: lining of vagina, oral cavity, part of phoenix, esophagus and anus
Simple, cuboidal, epithelium function
Primarily absorption and secretion
Simple cuboidal epithelium location
Covers the surface of the ovaries and lines thyroid gland, follicles
Forms the walls of kidney tubules
Forms the ducts and secretory regions of most exocrine glands
Non-ciliated simple, columnar epithelium function
Absorption and secretion; secretion of mucin
Non-ciliated simple columnar epithelium location
Non-ciliated: lines most of the digestive tract, from stomach to anal canal; lining of stomach does not contain goblet cells
Ciliated, simple, columnar, epithelium function
Secretion of mucin and movement of mucus along apical surface of epithelium by action of cilia; oocyte movement through uterine tube
Stratified, columnar, epithelium function
Protection and secretion
Stratified, columnar, epithelium location
Relatively rare, found in the membranous segment of the male urethra and enlarged ducts of some exocrine glands like the salivary glands
Pseudo stratified, columnar, epithelium function
Both types perform protection. Ciliated form has goblet cells involved with secretion of mucin and movement of mucus across surface with ciliary action.
Non-ciliated form has no goblet cells or cilia
Pseudo stratified, columnar, epithelium location
Ciliated: lines, most of the respiratory tract
Non-ciliated: rare, lines, the epidermis and part of male urethra
Pseudo stratified, ciliated, columnar epithelium function
Ciliated form has goblet cells involved with secretion of mucin and movement of mucus across surface with ciliary action. This helps propel dust particles and foreign material away from the lungs, and to the nose and mouth; protection.
Pseudo, stratified, ciliated, kilometer epithelium location
Lines most of the larger portions of the respiratory tract, nasal cavity, part of the phoenix, the larynx, the trachea, and the bronchi
