Epithelial Tissue of Squamous Epithelia Flashcards
Define Tissue:
Group of cells that work together as a unit to carry out a specialized function
What are the 4 types of tissues:
Epithelial
Connective
Muscle
Nervous
Where is Epithelial Tissue found?
Covers all body surfaces
Outside surgaces of organs
Inner linings of hollow organs
Lines walls of body cavities
Exterior surface of body
What anchors the base of epithelium?
Anchored to connective tissue by the basal lamina (basement membrane)
Epithelia are classified by 2 structural criteria:
The # of cell layers
The shape of the cells
Describe SIMPLE Squamous epithelia:
Single layer of flattened cells
Inner linings of blood vessels (endothelium)
Lining of body cavities
Describe STRATIFIED Squamous Epithelia:
Several layers of cells, top layer are flatted, lower layer are cube-shaped
Provide protection from friction
Inner lining of Esophagus
Inner lining of vaginal canal
Describe STRATIFIED Squamous, Keratinized:
Several layers of cells, thick layer of dead cells at the surface filled with Keratin fibers (keratin layer)
Serves as a protective barrier against dehydration and infection from airborn germs
Epidermis of the skin
