Cell's Organelles Flashcards
Peroxisomes function?
Contain enzymes that neutralize toxins produced by cellular metabolism
Break down fatty acids
Lysosmes function?
Filled w/ digestive enzymes
Digest old organelles
Destroy harmful bacteria, viruses, toxins
Centrioles function:
Located in the centrosome
Produce microtubules for the cytoskeleton
Form mitotic spindle for mitosis
Microvilli function:
Tiny fingerlike extensions that absorb substances
Golgi Apparatus function:
Series of flattened membranous sacs
Modify and package proteins that are produced by the rough endoplasmic reticulum
Endoplasmic reticulum (ER) function:
Highly folded membranous structure that enclose a network of fluid-filled cavities
Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum function:
Studded with ribosomes
The site of protein synthesis
Produce proteins that are secreted by the cell and used by the plasma membrane or lysosomes
Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum function:
Lacks ribosomes
Synthesizes lipids and glycogen
Detoxifies posions and various drugs
Nucleolus function:
Suspended gel-like matrix
Produced ribosomes
Chromatin function:
Composed of complex molecules of DNA & protein
DNA is the genetic material of the cell
Nuclear Envelope function:
Double membrane that seperates the nucleoplasm from the cytoplasm
Nuclear pores allow passage of substances in and out of the nucleus
Free Ribosomes function:
Produces proteins used for celluar metabolism
Mitochondria function:
Bean-shaped structure
Produces most of the cell’s energy in the form of ATP
Plasma Membrane function:
Composed of Phospholipids, proteins, carbohydrates
Carbohydrates act as a selective barrier b/w the cell and the external environment
Cytoskeleton function:
Contains 3 types of proteim filaments microtubules, intermediate and micro filaments
Provide strength and flexibility for the cell and support for other organelles
The three parts of the Nucleus?
The Nucleolus
Chromatin
Nuclear envelope
What kind of cell is found in thr human body
Eukaryotic cells
Difference b/w Memranous organelles and Non-membranous organelles?
Sorrounded or not surrounded by a phospholipid membrane that seperates organelles from cytosol
