epithelial tissue Flashcards
What are tissues?
Groups of similar cells that perform specific functions
What does epithelial tissue do?
It covers exposed surfaces & cavities
What are the characteristics of epithelial tissue?
-Packed close together
-Attached to underlying tissue called the basement membrane
-Avascularity: no blood vessels
-Regeneration
What is squamos?
Thin and flat cells
What is cuboidal?
Square shaped cells
What is columnar?
Tall rectangles
What is simple?
Single cell layer
What is stratified?
Several layers of cells
What is pseudostratified?
Appears stratified but it is a single cell layer
What is the location of simple squamos?
Alveoli of lungs, bowman’s capsule of nephron, endothelium of blood vessels
What is the function of simple squamos?
Filtration, diffusion, osmosis
What is the location of simple cuboidal?
Covers the surface of the ovary, lines nephron tubules
What is the function of simple cuboidal?
Secretion (secrete enzymes) absorption (take in nutrients + carbs)
What is the location of simple columnar?
Lines stomach, uterus, intestines, & gallbladder
What is the function of simple columnar?
Secretion (secrete enzymes) absorption (take in nutrients + carbs)
What is the location/function of stratified squamous nonkeratinized?
Esophagus, vagina, mouth
function: protection
What is the location/function of stratified squamous keratinized?
Epidermis of skin
function: protection
What is the location of pseudostratified cilliated columnar epithelium?
Trachea (windpipe) & oviducts (fallopian tubes)
What is the function of pseudostratified cilliated columnar epithelium?
Secretion + movement by cillia
What is the location of transitional?
Lines urinary bladder & ureter
What is the function of transitional?
Distension (stretching)
What is the location of glandular?
Endocrine (produce+secrete hormones) & exocrine (secrete sweat) glands
What is the function of glandular?
Secretion
