cell structures & function Flashcards
Plasma Membrane
-Cell Barrier: Separates what is inside from outside
-Membrane Transport: Anything that goes in & out of a cell
-Cell Identification: Identifies what type of cell it is
Ribosomes
-Protein Synthesis: Building of protein
Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum
-Protein and Glycoprotein (carbohydrate) synthesis
-Ribosomes are attached
-Makes a lot of protein
Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum
-Lipid Synthesis (production)
-Stores calcium ions in muscle cells
-Detoxification by liver cells: the body produces toxic chemicals, and converts toxic into non-toxic
-Makes a lot of lipids
Golgi Apparatus
-Modify Protein: Shifted from ribosome
-Package Protein: Puts them in a vesicle
-Lysosomes Synthesis: Produced in Golgi
Lysosomes
-Made up of a membrane, inside are digestive enzymes
I-ntracellular Digestion: digestion inside the cell
-Autolysis: Digestion of the entire cell
Mitochondrion
-Site most cell ATP Synthesis
-ATP = cell energy
-EX: muscle cells need ATP to contract
Centrioles
-Involved in the movement of chromosomes during cell division
-EX: mitosis/miosis
-Always in a pair
Cillia
-Move materials over the cell surface
-Little hair-like structures
-Not all cells have them
Vesicles
-Membranous storage sacs
-Floats around
-May store carbs, lipids, waste, etc.
Nucleus
-Stores most of the cell’s DNA
-Nucleolus is in Nucleus
Nucleolus
-Site of ribosome synthesis
-Produces ribosomes
