connective tissue Flashcards
What is connective tissue?
-Most abudant & diverse
-Matrix = extracellular component of connective tissue
What are the three types of protein fiber?
- Collagen fibers - strong & flexible
- Elastic fibers - protein called elastin, strech
- Reticular fibers - thin, branching
What are the common cell types found in connective tissue?
- Fibroblasts - produce 3 protein fibers
- Plasma cells - produce antibodies
- Macrophage - Phagocytic cells
- Mast cells - contain histamine (inflammatory substance) + heparin (anticoagulant)
- Lymphocytes - Type of WBC
- Neutrophils & Eosinophils - specialized wbc’s
What is the location of areolar tissue?
Subcutaneous layer (below the skin) + around blood vessels & nerves
What is the function of areolar tissue?
Elasticity and support
What is the location of adipose tissue?
Subcutaneous layer of skin, around heart, kidneys, & yellow bone marrow
What is the function of adipose tissue?
Fat storage, insulation, & protection
What is the location of dense regular tissue?
Tendons + ligaments
What is the function of dense regular tissue?
Provide strong attachment & has collagen fibers
What is the location of dense irregular tissue?
Dermis of skin & pericardium of heart
What is the function of dense irregular tissue?
Provides strength and has randomly arranged collagen fibers
What is the location of reticular tissue?
Lymph nodes, spleen, & red bone marrow
What is the function of reticular tissue?
Provides supporting framework of various organs and has reticular fibers
What is the location of the bone?
Skeleton
What is the function of the bone?
Support, protection, movement, storage of minerals, houses blood forming tissue
