Epithelia Flashcards
What are epithelia?
Continuous sheets of cells that cover the exterior surfaces of the body, line internal closed cavities and body tubes
Secretory portions of glands
What do epithelial cells stand on?
The basement membrane
Do epithelial cells have a blood supply?
No, they are avascular
How do epithelial cells receive oxygen and metabolites?
Via diffusion
What are the two major types of epithelia?
Covering epithelia
Glandular epithelia
What 4 things do covering epithelia do?
Selective diffusion
Absorption and secretion
Physical protection
Containment
What are the two types of gland?
Exocrine
Endocrine
Describe exocrine glands
Can be unicellular or multicellular
Secretions delivered into ducts
Describe endocrine glands
No ducts
Released into blood stream
What three things help us classify epithelia?
How many layers of cells are there?
What is the cell shape?
Are the specialisations on the apical surface?
What name is given to a layer of single cells?
Simple epithelium
What is the name given to two or more layers of cells?
Stratified epithelium
What is pseudostratified epithelium?
One layer of cells where the nuclei are at different heights givin the appearance of more than one layer
What is a squamous cell?
A flat cell
What is a cuboidal cell?
A cell that appears square
