Epithelia Flashcards
1
Q
Simple squamous
A
- the cytoplasm is thinner than the nucleus giving a “fried egg” appearance
- single layer; found in serosa/capsule
2
Q
Serosa/capsule
A
- simple squamous that covers outside of an organ
- look at the outer edge of the organ
3
Q
Visceral pleura
A
- the serosa on the surface of the lungs
- simple squamous epithelial layer
4
Q
Parietal peritoneum
A
- simple squamous epithelial layer along with the connective tissue lining the abdominal wall is a serosa
5
Q
Visceral peritoneum
A
- serosa that covers the internal organs
6
Q
Mesentery
A
- the layer that suspends the organs in the body cavity
- is continuous with the parietal peritoneum that suspends the organs
7
Q
Areolar spread
A
- a piece of the mesentery of the gut
8
Q
Simple cuboidal epithelium
A
- a single layer of cells whose height and depth roughly equals their width (3D)
- width=height=length
9
Q
Secretory acini
A
- simple cuboidal epithelium
- can call acini a duct
- small tight duct that looks like a pizza pie
10
Q
Simple columnar epithelium
A
- the length of a cell exceeds its width
11
Q
Microvilli
A
- outward projections of the cell membrane whose function is to increase the surface area of the cell
12
Q
Cilia
A
- have microtubules and their function is to actively sweep things along the lumenal wall
13
Q
Ciliated Pseudostratified columnar epithelium
A
- as wide and tall as nucleus
- see cilia, think pseudostratified
- means it is really simple
- commonly found in trachea
14
Q
Stereocilia
A
- not cilia
- are actually very long microvilli
15
Q
Stratified cuboidal epithelium
A
- 2 cell thick
- remember width=height=length
16
Q
Keratinized Stratified squamous epithelium
A
- keratin is the outer most layer
- skin and sole of foot
17
Q
Non-keratinized stratified squamous epithelium
A
- the epithelium lining the esophagus in humans
18
Q
Transitional epithelium
A
- type of stratified epithelium (3-5 cell layers thick)
- found only in the unitary tract
- cap cells lie on the surface of the epithelium
19
Q
Cap cells
A
- large, covering more than one cell below them
- often stain more intensely
May not be seen in every field
20
Q
Unicellular glands
A
- specialized cells which secrete their substance onto an epithelial surface
- goblet cell or mucous cell
- simple columnar epithelium
21
Q
Goblet cells
A
- the secretion is mucus
- its base, which contains the nucleus, is narrow; however the portion near the apical surface is wide and round and contains most of the mucus
22
Q
Multicellular glands
A
- simplest is the tubular gland
- the inner secretory portions of the glands often expand to form specialized structures: alveoli and acini
- often the ducts of the glands are covered by thin layers of smooth muscle
23
Q
Alveoli
A
- large sac-like expansions
- the lumina are wide and a considerable amount of secretion May be stored in them
- simple squamous epithelium
24
Q
Acini
A
- small clusters of cells wrapped around a small lumen which contains little or no secretion
- pizza pie
