Connective Tissue Flashcards
1
Q
Connective tissue
A
- forms a framework upon which epithelial tissue rests within which nerve tissue and muscle tissue are embedded
-blood vessels and nerve tissue travel through it - it functions not only as a mechanical support for other tissues but also as an avenue for communication and transport among other tissue
- two groups: connective tissue proper & specialized CT
2
Q
Cells
A
- unspecialized connective tissue
- the main cells is the fibroblast
3
Q
Fibroblast
A
- synthesizes the extracellular matrix and collagen
- responsible for the secretion of the intercellular elements
- smaller and darker than the nuclei of smooth muscle cells
- little cytoplasm, structural framework (stoma) for animal tissues
(Trachea)
4
Q
Macrophage
A
- found in unspecialized connective tissue (loose)
- smaller, rounder nucleus and denser than the fibroblast
- visible cytoplasm, found in skin
5
Q
Eosinophils
A
- have bright red grandiose in their cytoplasm
- a large blood cell with a bilobed nucleus
- one of several white blood cells that support the immune system
6
Q
Mast cells
A
- small, centrally placed nucleus
- cytoplasm filled with find, closely packed, and dense-staining granules
- closely packed with eosinophils
- histamine granules around small circles that surround the mast cell
7
Q
Fibers
A
- collagen (acidophillic= pink with H&E stain) is the glue
- elastic fibers (also stained pink) are very elastic
- reticular fibers (thinnest and like a soccer net which means things can get though it sometimes)
8
Q
Collagen
A
- acidophilic (stains pink with H&E)
- has wispy or rope-like appearance
- fibroblasts are responsible for its secretion
9
Q
Elastic fibers
A
- found in urinary bladder
- underneath the transitional epithelium
- form brightly stained pink, very refractive and contrasting strongly with the dull pink collage nous fibers
10
Q
Ground substance
A
- composed mostly of mucopolysaccharide (glycoaminoglycan aka GAG) which is hyaluronic acid
- washes out in most histological functions
- supports the CT and is the gelatinous material that holds cells and structures in place
- found in areolar spread
11
Q
Loose (areolar) collangenous CT
A
- areolar refers to the small spaces filled with ground substances
- unspecialized CT; found in the cervix or vagina
- light-staining CT
12
Q
Dense collagenous CT
A
- found in skin, sole of foot
- capsules of organs
- forms a tough capsule around the spleen
13
Q
Reticular tissue
A
- found in areas through which liquid must percolate
- can be seen in lymph nodes, spleen and in the laminate proprietor of the digestive tract
- held in place by reticular fibers
14
Q
White fat
A
- cellular connective tissue (specialized)
- looks like soap bubbles or singlet rings
- becomes modified storage cells
- cytoplasm is reduced to a thin rim around this mass
15
Q
Brown fat
A
- each containing numerous small lipid droplets, occupy the central region of the image
- the brown fat is surrounded by ordinary white fat with each advocate containing a single (unilocular large lipid droplet)
- rare in humans but plentiful in rodents
