Epilepsy Flashcards
What is seizure?
abnormal sudden burst of electrical activity in the brain which can cause loss of consciousness or altered behaviour
How can seizures be recorded?
through EEG (which represents the rhythm summated of electrical activity of large numbers of synapses located in more of the superficial layers of the cerebral cortex)
How is seizures different from epilepsy?
patient with epilepsy have unpredicted and recurrent seizures
What are seizures?
some neurons that become synchronously active ( when they are not supposed to be)
What does an active neuron mean?
Sends an electrical signal throughout the neuron, passing it from one neuron to another
What exactly is an electrical signal passing through the membrane of the neuron?
Ions flowing in and out through protein channels
Who controls the ion flow through the membrane of the neurons?
Neurotransmitters
What is the main excitatory neurotransmitter in the brain ?
Glutamate
What is the main inhibitory neurotransmitters in the brain?
Gabba
What is the channel that will open when a signal is transmitted throughout the neuron membrane? (Excitatory neurotransmitter )
Calcium channel does calcium ions come inside of the neuron membrane
What is the channel that will open when there is an inhibition of the signal throughout the neuron membrane? (Inhibitory neurotransmitter)
Cl- channels, thus Cl- will be released
What is the ion that tells the neurons to inhibit a signal?
Chloride ions
What is the ion that tells the neuron to transmit the signal?
Calcium ions
What type of seizure is limited to one hemisphere or one lobe of the brain?
Focal seizures
How are focal seizures sub categorized?
Focal seizures with impaired awareness or focal seizures without impaired awareness
