Q

What are glioblastomas?

A

-also known as glioblastoma multiforme (GBM)
-most invasive tumors
-tumors are often devastating and rapidly fatal
-arise from hemispheric white matter typically in the frontal and temporal lobes
-Sometimes they cross the midline via the corpus callosum or anterior commissure and invade the contralateral hemisphere, which gives them a “butterfly” appearance
-areas of pseudopalisading means that cells are arranged in a “picket-fence” pattern surrounding a necrotic core

Q

What conversion does the IDH-1 and IDH-2 catalyze?

A

isocitrate to alpha-ketoglutarate

Q

Mutations in IDH-1 and IDH-2 cause neoenzymatic function where…

A

alpha- ketoglutarate is converted to 2-hydroxyglutarate
