Marbury v. Madison (1803)
The Supreme Court upheld broad congressional power to regulate interstate commerce. The Court’s broad interpretation of the Constitution’s commerce clause paved the way for later rulings upholding expansive federal powers. Article 6: National Supremacy (The Constitution is the supreme law of the land or the highest law in the land) and Article 1 Section 8 (Powers granted to Congress - 3. Commerce)
Gibbons v. Ogden, 1824
Slaves do not have the rights of citizens. Slaves are not citizens and cannot sue in federal court. (Overturned by 13th and 14th Amendments)
Dred Scott v. Sandford (1857)
Established the separate but equal doctrine
Plessy v. Ferguson (1896)
Separate but equal facilities are unconstitutional, overturned Plessy v. Ferguson
Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka (1954)
