EO 001.01 - PPE Flashcards
What six elements are needed in the Chain of Infection
- Infectious agent
- Reservoir
- Portal of exit
- Mode of transmission
- Portal entry
- Host
Define Infectious agent
A biological agent responsible for infectious disease
Define Reservoir
Is where a pathogen can survive and reproduce or not
Define Portal of exit
A portal of exit is where the pathogen can potentially leave the reservoir.
i.e. the reservoir is a person, the exits out of a human body includes any of the openings (such as mouth, nose, vagina, urethra, rectum) and artificial ones such as ostomies, any breaks in the skin from a wound.
Define Mode of transmission, and it’s four main types
Contact Transmission
1. Direct
2. Indirect
3. Droplet
Airborne Transmission
Vehicle Transmission
Vector Borne Transmission
Define Portals of Entry
Portals of Entry are the same routes that organisms use to exit the body.
Define Host
A host is anyone who may be susceptible to develop an infection when they come into contact with pathogens.
Define Microorganism
A living organism too small to be seen with the naked eye like bacteria, virus, fungi, spores and protozoa
Define Pathogen
Microorganism able of producing infection or disease in it’s host
Define Pathogen
Microorganism able of producing infection or disease in its host
Define Carrier
May be an Asymptomatic person or animal that has pathogens ON or IN its body and the potential to develop the disease
Which is smaller, Bacteria or a Virus?
Virus
What elements promote the proliferation of pathogens in a reservoir?
- Food
- Oxygen
- Water
- Temperature
- pH level
- Minimal light
List three kinds of Contact Transmission
- Direct
- Indirect
- Droplet
What are the four stages of infection?
- Incubation period
- Prodromal stage
- Illness (Symptomatic) Stage
- Convalescence
