Enzymes and (Aerobic) Resperation Flashcards
What is respiration in general absolutely NOT?
Respiration is NOT ‘breathing in and out’!
What controls the chemical reactions that happen in cells during respiration?
Enzymes control the chemical reactions that happen in cells during respiration.
What do enzymes do in all the reactions that take place during respiration?
Enzymes catalyse all the reactions that take place during respiration.
Define respiration.
Respiration is the process of releasing energy from the breakdown (digestion?) of glucose.
In other words, the way of releasing energy from food.
Where does respiration happen?
Respiration happens in every cell in your body.
Which living things respire?
ALL living things respire.
Complete the sentence: aerobic respiration needs plenty of ……….. to take place?
Aerobic respiration need plenty of OXYGEN to take place.
Which is the more efficient way of releasing energy from glucose- aerobic or anaerobic respiration?
Aerobic respiration is the most efficient way of releasing energy from glucose.
When does aerobic respiration take place in plants and animals?
Aerobic respiration takes place continuously in plants and animals.
Where do most of the reactions in aerobic respiration take place?
Most of the reactions in aerobic respiration take place inside MITOCHONDRIA (hence the epithet: ‘powerhouse of the cell’).
What is the GCSE level word equation for respiration?
Glucose + oxygen -> carbon dioxide + ENERGY
Which four things does respiration release energy for?
- To build up larger molecules from smaller ones (e.g. proteins from amino acids)
- In animals, to allow muscles to contract (allows movement)
- In mammals and birds the energy is used to keep their body temperature steady (unlike other animals, mammals and birds keep their bodies constantly warm)
- In plants, the energy is used to build sugars, nitrates and other nutrients into amino acids, which are then built up into proteins.
How does cyanide kill you?
Cyanide is a toxin that stops enzymes involved in respiration, thus preventing your cells from respiring. Your brain, heart, and liver are affected first because they have the highest energy demands, and, since these are vital organs, you will die from cyanide pretty quickly.
