Q

Define respiration.

A

Respiration is the process of releasing energy from the breakdown (digestion?) of glucose.

In other words, the way of releasing energy from food.

Q

Where do most of the reactions in aerobic respiration take place?

A

Most of the reactions in aerobic respiration take place inside MITOCHONDRIA (hence the epithet: ‘powerhouse of the cell’).

Q

Which four things does respiration release energy for?

A
  1. To build up larger molecules from smaller ones (e.g. proteins from amino acids)
  2. In animals, to allow muscles to contract (allows movement)
  3. In mammals and birds the energy is used to keep their body temperature steady (unlike other animals, mammals and birds keep their bodies constantly warm)
  4. In plants, the energy is used to build sugars, nitrates and other nutrients into amino acids, which are then built up into proteins.

Q

How does cyanide kill you?

A

Cyanide is a toxin that stops enzymes involved in respiration, thus preventing your cells from respiring. Your brain, heart, and liver are affected first because they have the highest energy demands, and, since these are vital organs, you will die from cyanide pretty quickly.
