Cell Division- Mitosis Flashcards
What do our cells need to be able to do on order to survive and grow?
Divide
What 2 things does mitosis make new cells for?
- Growth
- Repair
How many copies of each chromosome do body cells usually have?
2
What makes up each half of the DNA in human cells?
- DNA from the mother
- DNA from the father
How many pairs of chromosomes are normally in a human body cell?
23
(46 individual ones)
Is there a pair of chromosomes which are a bit different?
Yes - the X and Y chromosomes (gametes)
(More on that in meioisis pack)
When a body cell divides, what are the 2 things do the new cells need?
- To be identical to the orginal cell
- Contain the same number of chromosomes as the original cell
When is mitosis used, and in which organisms?
Animals and plants use it to grow or replace cells that have been damaged
Mitosis is when a cell ____ itself by ____ to form ____ ____ ____ .
Mitosis is when a cell reproduces itself by splitting to form 2 identical offspring.
What are the 6 stages to mitosis?
- Long strings of DNA curl up to form visible chromosomes
- The DNA is copied and form X-shaped chromosomes
- The chromosomes line up in the centre of the cell
- The chromosome helves are pulled to the opposite sides of the cell by cell fibres
- Membranes form around the chromosomes at each end to form nuclei
- The cytoplasm divides
Before a cell divides by mitosis, what is its DNA like?
All spread out in long strings
What can you say about the relationship between each ‘arm’ of the chromosomes in mitosis?
They hold identical DNA - they are an exact duplicate of the other
What do you call the 2 cells formed by mitosis?
Daughter cells
What did the daughter cell say to her sister when she trod on her foot?
My toe sis!
What can mitosis be used for? (2)
- Growth and repair in plants and animals
- Asexual reproduction in plants
