Environmental Impact Flashcards
1
Q
Environmental pollution occurs when
A
we contaminate, harm, or kill plants and animals that live there.
2
Q
Impacts of onshore drilling
A
- Noise
- Soil contamination
- greenhouse gases
- leakes
- disturbance to wildlife
- damage to habitat
- erosion
- visual intrusion
global warming
3
Q
Impacts of offshore drilling
A
- green house gases
- spillages
- water pollution
- disturbance to wildlife
global warming
4
Q
distribution of oil pollution causes in order
A
- waste oil
- regular maintancence of ship
- natural seeps
- burning oil
- major tanker disasters
- offshore drilling activities
5
Q
•Spill Kits:
A
- –Absorbents:
- •Oil Sorb (diatomaceous earth)
- •Polypropylene
- –Blocking materials:
- •Sandbags
- •Elastomer mats
- •Elastomer berms
6
Q
Oil Sorb
A
(diatomaceous earth)
- Uses: spread on edge, work back to source
- Limitations:
- absorb weight in oil
- Doesn’t float on water
7
Q
Polypropylene
A
- Uses: spread on edge, work back to source
- Limitations:
- absorbs up to 25x its weight in oil
- Will only absorb oil
- Will float on water even if saturated with oil
8
Q
•Sandbags
A
- Uses: Place on flow path, butt ends together
- Limitations:
- Good seal of leak difficult
- Doesn’t absorb oil
- Each bag is 70lbs/~32kg (very heavy to move)
9
Q
•Elastomer mats
A
- Uses: Place over storm/sanitary drains to seal them
- Limitations:
- May not complete cover drains
- Good seal difficult on rough surfaces or curbs
10
Q
•Elastomer berms
A
- Uses: Place in the path of flow to form barrier
- Lay around drain openings to form barrier
- Limitations:
- May not completely encircle some large drains
- Good seal difficult on rough surfaces or curbs
