What are the causes of discharge?
A
Otitis media/externa, Cholesteatoma

How can you differentiate between different types of discharge?
A
Otitis externa: inflammatory - scanty, smelly, + wax
Otitis media - mucous/serosanguinous (-> offensive = cholesteatoma)
CSF otorrhoea - following trauma

How does otitis media present?
A
After a cold, with anorexia, vomiting, generally being unwell

How do you treat otitis media?
A
Acute OM Resolves after 24hrs without abx; if persistent, systemically unwell….antibiotics.
Beware mastoiditis!

What is a glue ear?
A
Otitis media with effusion (after regression of acute OM)

How is glue ear treated?
A
active observation, autoinflation, grommets
