Characterization

A

Types of characters:
•protagonist/hero/heroine (main character)
•antagonist (another important Character who is in conflict with protagonist)
•flat character (does not change/no depth)
•round character (changes/presented in detail)

Types of characterizations:
•direct/explicit narrator or a character tells the reader explicitly what the characters are like)
•indirect/implicit (Reader interprets a character By what a character things says Feels or does and how he interacts with others)

Step 1:
Collect any relevant information given in the text
•personal data(name age gender and appearance)
•what the character says/does/thinks (main traits/behavior/mood/views/language)
•what others say (or the narrator) says about him/her

What do those findings say/ reveal about the character? Does his behavior change the story or the viewers opinion change?

Step 2:
Introduction
•Briefly present the character (basic data and outward appearance)
•say what his function/role in the story is and how he relates to other characters

Body
• Describe the characters traits, behavior and development Providing details from you notes
• do not forget to use examples and quotes
to support your statements

Conclusion
•Sum up the most important traits/what the reader learns about the character/state if he stays flat or develops

Vocabulary:
Their relationship is characterized by deep affection/hostility/suspicion
From a higher social standing, so as to please her, in response to the social standing of his clientele, understood through his behavior, conduct and speech/on balance/in conclusion/ to sum up/act as a foil/reflect the character/stands in clear contrast to

furthermore/additionally/moreover/evidently/apparently/in fact/despite/due to/accordingly/as a consequence/hence/owing to this/erratic/contemptuous

Outline

A

Only focus to the the information relevant to the task! Don’t sum up the whole text!!!! In Present tense and only 1/3 of the whole text

  • highlight key words/sentences relevant to the task
  • collect information on the required aspect
  • in Your own words outline the information required by the task

Include:
•an introductory sentence relating to the issues the task requires you to focus on (e.g. The excerpt deals with the situation of migrant workers in California got it contains information concerning…)
•Text Type, title,etc may be given
•all the essential information referring to the task
•Present Tense
•change direct into indirect speech(author claims, believes, clarifies, suggests)

NOT INCLUDE:
• restatement of the task 
•I and personal opinion or comments 
•unnecessary explanations
•quotation and direct speech 

Vocabulary:

According to the study/most of the findings are based on a survey

A
  • understand the authors general message/attitude
  • note down arguments you want to use in your comment,explain them giving evidence/examples from text and/or other material
  • if you are asked to discuss on a quote/statement be sure to explain its meaning/message first before you disgust on the issue at hand

Introduction:
Refer to the topic,stating the issue (in own words)
Catch interest

Main Body:
•Refer to the authors arguments in a more detailed way(author claims, suggests, states…)
•In a discussion you present and weigh the pros and cons of the issue
•focus on the arguments you want to support and present your own opinion
•include supporting material from other sources (books, articles, statistic…)
•arrange in chronological order

Conclusion:
•say what conclusion you have come to

Vocabulary:
All in all, I would like to conclude, we have to bear in mind/with this in mind, as far as I can see, those who advocate …, often argue…/ I strongly question/Lastly and foremost/expose ourselves to the challenges of a world filled with the mystery of the unknown/by stepping out of our comfort zone/…are key…

Article/blog entry

A
  • purpose of blog/entry and target group(their interests and why)
  • which aspects should you focus on?

Heading:
Capture readers interest/focus on topics/aspects
Blog:personal greeting is allowed

Introduction:
•Explain why the information might be of relevance to your target group
•State the topic and aspects the article is focusing on
•mention source of German text!!!(Paraphrase/translation)
•explain what kind of Source(Magazine etc)
•you May address Reader

Main Part:
Sum up/outline/
Present the information on the aspect relevant to the task
•focus on ideas expressed by the author
•explain german terms, concepts, public figures
•you may reorganize the ideas from the German text
!!dont evaluate the authors ideas!!!

Conclusion:
•Clearly indicate that you are coming to a conclusion
•don’t repeat what was said before
•final sentence with a brief summary of the overall ideas your text is focusing on
•final sentence may briefly comment on the issue but make clear it’s your opinion
•outlook or make an appeal

Present tense
Article: standard English
Blog: slightly informal style is allowed
