A response to an argument by attacking a person’s character instead of their arguments.

A reference to a famous person, text or event.
What effect does an ad hominem have?
To undermine the credibility of opponents & subsequently their arguments.

Referencing a famous entity implies that the famous entity supports their case.
What’s an analogy?
A comparison between 2 things that are very similar.
What’s the effect of an analogy?
By arguing that because 2 things are similar in 1 way, they will be similar in other ways.

The deliberate repetition of the 1st part of a sentence.

To give prominence to important ideas. It’s used to appeal to an audience’s emotions & motivate & encourage them.

A story to add to an argument’s credibility.

The tendency to lean in favour towards one side of an argument even when presenting a factual case.

Language aimed at stirring emotions.

It makes the readers feel strong emotions that lead them to follow their emotions than logically consider the case.

Material used in support of argument like facts/statistics, expert testimony, research findings, anecdotal evidence.

Positive - Give weight & credibility to argument.<br></br>Negative - Undermines argument if used negatively or overused.

An effective expert reference that backs up a point in the argument.
