Energy Systems Flashcards
What are energy systems?
Bioenergetic systems are metabolic processes that relate to the flow of energy in living organisms.
- Convert energy into Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP)
- Photosynthesis in plants
- Cellular respiration in animals/mammals
All biological organisms must synthesise ATP for utilisation of cells.
In animals ATP is synthesised in the mitochondria
What is the system that converts ADP back to ATP
The Krebs cycle
What fuel is used in ATP-PCr and what type of activity is powered? What is its by-product and how many ATP are produced?
(in muscle)
Creatine Phospate is the fuel used. It is very high-intensity ,short duration(6-10secs) without the use of 02 & active at the onset of all activity.
Its by-product is Creatine and produces 1 ATP.
What fuel is used in Anaerobic Glycolysis and what type of activity is powered? What is its by-product and how many ATP are produced?
(Lactic Acid)
Glycogen is the fuel used. it is high intensity short to moderate duration(10-90secs) without the use of 02.
Its product is Lactic Acid and produces 2 ATP
What fuel is used in Oxidative Phosphorylation and what type of activity is powered? What is its by-product and how many ATP are produced?
(Aerobic Glycolysis)
Carbohydrates,Fats
Protein ( Extreme circumstances) are the fuel used. Low to moderate intensity ,long duration (>90secs) By-products CO2 and H20
Produces Carbs; 36-39
Fats. >100. ATP
Which energy system is most efficient?
Oxidative Phosphorylation (Aerobic Glycolysis)
