Energy Systems Flashcards
When is the aerobic system used?
-Extended length of game and long periods of play or endurance events
-Provides energy for lower level intensity activity in game
-For example jogging around the field
How does the aerobic system provide energy?
-Stage 1: Glycolysis (anerobic glycolysis)
-Glyocgen broken down into pyruvate (carbohydrates as fuel)
-2 ATP produced
-Beta oxidation of fats (triglycerides) before entering Krebs cycle
-Stage 2: Krebs cycle: oxidation of acetyl coenzyme A and production of CO2 as part of Krebs cycle
-2 ATP produced
-Stage 3: electron transfer chain: forms water and hydrogen ions
-Large quantities of ATP (34)
Anerobic glycolytic system- when is it used?
-When games/events require energy for high intensity activity
-For activities lasting over 8-10s up to 3 min
-For example in football extended period of sprinting to move from one end of the field to the other
How does the anerobic glycolytic system work?
-Anerobic glycolysis (same as stage 1 of aerobic system!!)
-Glycogen broken down into pyruvic acid (carbohydrates used as fuel at high intensity)
-2 ATP produced
When is the ATP-PC system used?
-Provides energy for high intensity activity
-Short powerful movements up to 10s
-For example, a short sprint to the ball, making a tackle, taking a shot, goal keeper making a save
How does the ATP-PC system work?
-PC broken down
-Energy used for ATP resynthesis (ADP + P + energy = ATP
-Only 1 ATP produced
