Energy Systems Flashcards
Phosphagen system pathway
Anaerobic - no oxygen
Phosphagen system definition
Involves creatine phosphate and the re-generation of ATP
Phosphagen system substrates
Creatine phosphate - CP
Phosphagen system amount of ATP
Very limited - additional phosphate is provided by CP that is present in the muscles. Creatine kinase acts to break it down and it the P to ADP to make ATP
Phosphagen system Waste/by product
No fatiguing waste products
Continually adds P to ADP until levels of CP decrease
Phosphagen system intensity
Very high intensity, short duration, 95-100% max effort, 8-10 seconds
Lactic Acid System pathway
Anaerobic - no oxygen
Lactic Acid System definition
Anaerobic glycolysis involves the splitting of 1 glucose into 2 molecules of pyruvic acid. No oxygen is present so it is converted into lactic acid causing fatigue
Lactic Acid System substrates
Glucose & glycogen
Lactic Acid System amount of ATP
Limited ATP - 2 ATP
Lactic Acid System waste/by products
Lactic acid, fatiguing by product
Lactic Acid System intensity
Short duration, high intensity, 60-95% max effort, 1-3 minutes intense exercise
Aerobic System pathway
Aerobic - with oxygen
Aerobic System defenition - Glycolysis
Splitting of 1 glucose molecule into 2 pyruvic acid molecules
Aerobic System defenition - Krebs cycle
Further breakdown of pyruvic acid and the release of more CO2
