Energy changes- main focuses Flashcards
What is an exothermic reaction?
Reaction that transfers energy to the surroundings usually by heating, this is shown by a rise in temperature
EG; combustion and neutralisation
What is an endothermic reaction?
Reaction which takes energy in from the surroundings, shown by a fall in temperature
EG; thermal decomposition
In an exothermic reaction profile, what does an exothermic reaction look like?
The products are at a lower energy then the reactants
In an endothermic reaction profile, what does an endothermic reaction look like?
The products are at a higher energy level than the reactants
What is the activation energy?
The minimum amount of energy the reactants need to collide with each other to react
Why is bond breaking endothermic?
Energy must be supplied to break existing bonds
Why is bond formation exothermic?
Energy is released when new bonds are formed
Why is a reaction exothermic?
The energy released by forming bonds is greater than the energy needed to break them
Whys is a reaction endothermic?
The energy used to break bonds is greater than the energy released by forming them
