Atomic structure- main focuses- part 2 Flashcards
What are group 1 metals?
Elements that have one electron in their outer shell which makes them very reactive
What happens as you move down group one?
1) increasing reactivity
2) lower melting and boiling points
3) higher relative mass
What are properties of group 1 metals?
1) soft
2) low density
What happens when group 1 reacts with
1) water
2) chlorine
3) oxygen
1) water- react vigorously to produce hydrogen gas and metal hydroxide
2) chlorine- react vigorously when heated in chlorine to form metal chloride salts
3) oxygen- forms metal oxide
What is group 7 known as?
Halogens
What happens as you move down group 7?
1) Less reactive
2) higher melting and boiling points
3) higher relative atomic mass
How do halogens form molecular compounds?
Halogens can share electrons via covalent bonding with other non-metals to achieve a full outer shell, forming molecular compounds
What do halogens form when they bond with a metal?
1- ions called halides
What is a displacement reaction?
Occurs when a more reactive halogen displaces a less reactive one
What are all group 0 elements?
Colourless gases which are very unreactive because they have a full outer shell
What are group 0 elemental also known as?
Nobel gases
What happenes as you move down group 0?
Boiling point increases along with relative atomic mass
