Chemical changes Flashcards
What do strong acids do in water?
Fully ionise and release H+ ions
What does acid strength tell you?
What proportion of the acid molecules ionise in water
What does acid+ metal carbonate produce?
Salt+ water+ carbon dioxide
What do all metal oxides and metal hydroxides form when reacted with acid?
salt and water
How can you make soluble salts from an insoluble base?
1) gently warm the acid
2) add insoluble base in excess
3) then filter out the excess
4) gently heat solution using a water bath
Then crystals will start to form
What is the reactivity series?
Potassium Sodium Lithium Calcium Magnesium Aluminium Carbon Zinc Iron tin lead Hydrogen Copper silver gold platinum
What does it mean by how high up a metal is in the reactivity series?
How reactive it is and how easily they form positive ions
What are the products of the reaction metal+ water?
metal+ water= metal hydroxide+ hydrogen
What is oxidation and what is reduction?
Oxidation= loss of oxygen/electrons Reduction= gain of oxygen/electrons
What do metals higher then carbon in the reactivity series have to be extracted by?
Electrolysis
What do metals below carbon need to be extracted by?
Reduction
