Bonding, structure and properties of matter- part 1 Flashcards
What is ionic bonding?
When a non metal and metal react together- the metal atom loses electrons to form a positively charged ion and the non metal gains these electrons
What diagrams show how ionic compounds are formed?
Dot and cross
What structure does an ionic compound have?
Giant ionic lattice, they have very strong electrostatic forces of attraction between oppositely charged ions
What are properties of ionic compounds?
1) High melting and boiling point
2) Cant conduct electricity when solid but can when liquid
3) dissolve in water
What is convalent bonding?
When non-metal atoms bond
What are 2 ways of drawing covalent bonds?
1) Dot and cross diagrams- electron shells overlap
2) displayed formula
What are simple molecular substances?
Molecules containing a few atoms joined together by covalent bonds eg- water, chlorine, hydrogen and methane
What are some properties of simple molecular substances?
1) covalent bonds
2) forces of attraction very weak
3) melting and boiling point low
4) don’t conduct electricity
What are polymers?
Long chains of monomers, that link together to form polymers
What are atoms in a polymer joined by?
By strong covalent bonds
Why are most polymers solid at room temperature?
The inter molecular forces between polymer molecules are large so lots of energy needed to break them, but not as large as ionic bonds
What are properties of giant covalent structures?
1) bonded by strong covalent bonds
2) high melting point
3) don’t conduct electricity- even when molten
