Energy Flashcards
What is the term for Energy?
The ability to make things happen.
What are the common forms of energy?
Kinetic, gravitational potential, sound, light, elastic potential, heat, electrical, nuclear and chemical.
Give an example of a form of kinetic energy.
A wheel spinning.
Give an example of gravitational potential energy.
An aeroplane.
Give an example of elastic potential.
An elastic band being stretched.
Give an example of chemical energy.
A sandwich.
Give an example of energy being stored.
When an elastic band is pulled, elastic potential energy is being stored and then transferred to kinetic energy making the elastic band move.
Chemical energy is stored in an apple.
What is the proper name for stored energy?
Potential energy
What form of energy do CD players give out?
Sound energy
What is the principle of conservation of energy?
Energy cannot be made or destroyed, just converted from one form to another.
What is a good example of an energy conversion?
Bow and arrow:
When the string is pulled back, the bow stores elastic potential energy. When the arrow is released, the elastic potential energy is converted to kinetic energy to make the arrow move through the air. This is then turned to gravitational potential energy making the arrow fall to the ground and it then turns to heat energy from the friction on landing. Energy cannot be destroyed.
Give another example of an energy transfer.
In a rocket takeoff, chemical energy is transferred to kinetic energy, heat energy, sound energy and light energy.
Name the common forms of wasted energy.
Heat and sound energy
And light in SOME cases
What diagrams do we use to illustrate energy transformations?
The Sankey diagram.
How do we calculate energy efficiency?
Efficiency = useful energy output DIVIDED by total energy input
