Chemical Detectives Flashcards
What colour does sodium turn in the flame test?
Orange
What are two chemical that indicate the presence of water?
Blue cobalt chloride and I white copper sulphate
What is the word equation for acid + metal?
Acid+ metal > hydrogen + salt
What is the sign for toxic?
A cross-skull in a triangle
What is the irritant(harmful) sign?
A large bold diagonal cross.
What is the sign for corrosive?
A liquid dropping on a surface and burning through doing the same to a hand in a triangle
What is the flammable sign?
Flames in a triangle
What is the sign for danger to the environment
A whale dying on the beach with burnt trees in a triangle.
Why do we use chemical tests?
It’s hard to find out what a colourless liquid is so we use a chemical test
Why is it hard to find out what chemical a gas is?
Because they are odourless and colourless.
What is the Ph scale?
It identifies acids and bases and how or weak they are.
Name a natural indicator.
Beet root.
How do we test Carbon dioxide?
Put a lit splint in carbon dioxide and it will go out/ breathe into lime water,it goes cloudy
How do we test hydrogen?
Put a lit splint in hydrogen and there will be a squeaky pop.
How do we test oxygen?
Put Amber’s into oxygen and they will re-light.
What is the word equation for metal + oxygen?
Metal + oxygen> metal oxide
What is the word equation for carbonate+acid?
Carbonate + acid> carbon dioxide + salt+ water
What is precipitation reaction?
It’s when two solutions are mixed together and one component from each of the solutions instantly attracts to each other forming a solid.
E.g. Sodium hydroxide + copper sulphate > (solid) copper hydroxide
Hewn two solutions are mixed together resulting in a solid made of a component from each of the solutions.
Name 3 ways we can tell a chemical reaction is happening.
Bubbles appear releasing gas, change in temperature, fizzing, pop or bang is heard, change in mass, precipitation(a solid is made), change in colour.
