what is the prognosis?
good due to early detection
risk factors
obesity
nulliparity
early menarche
late menopause
unopposed oestrogen. The addition of a progestogen to oestrogen reduces this risk (e.g. In HRT). The BNF states that the additional risk is eliminated if a progestogen is given continuously
diabetes mellitus
tamoxifen
polycystic ovarian syndrome
hereditary non-polyposis colorectal carcinoma
features
postmenopausal bleeding is the classic symptom
pain is not common and typically signifies extensive disease
Ix
> 55 –> referred to suspects cancer pathway
1st line TV US (normal endometrial thickness is 4mm)
hysteroscopy with biopsy
Mx
total abdominal hysterectomy with bilateral salpingooporectomy - localised disease
progesterone therapy - frail old ladies not suitable for surgery
