Endocrine Vocab Flashcards
What is a hormone?
One of the many types of secreted chemicals that are formed in specialized cells, travel in body fluids, and act on specific targets cells to change their functioning.
What is the endocrine system?
The system that regulates hormones in a multicellular organism.
What are endocrine glands?
A ductless plan that secretes hormones directly into the the interstitial fluid, form which they diffuse into the blood stream.
What are local regulators?
A secreted molecule that influences cells near where it is secreted.
What are neurotransmitters?
A molecule that is released from the synaptic terminal of a neon at a chemical synapse.
What are neurohormones?
A molecule that is secreted by a neuron, travels in body fluids, and acts on specific target cells to change their functioning.
What are pheromones?
In animals and fungi, a small molecule released into the environment that functions in communication between members of the same species. In animals, it acts much like a hormone in influencing physiology and behaviour.
What is signal transduction?
The linkage f a mechanical, chemical, or electromagnetic stimulus to a specific cellular response.
What is epinephrine?
A catecholamine that, when secreted by a hormone by the adrenal medulla, mediates “fight or flight” responses to short-term stresses. Also known as adrenaline.
What are cytokines?
Any group of proteins secreted by a number of cell types, including macrophages and helper T cells, that regulate the function of lymphocytes and other cells of the immune system.
What are growth factors?
A local regulator that acts on nearby cells to stimulate cell proliferation and differentiation.
What is the function of nitric oxide in cells?
It is a gas that is produced my many types of cells. It functions as a local regulator and as a neurotransmitter.
What is a catecholamine?
Any of a class of euro transmitters and hormones including the hormones epinephrine and norepinephrine, that are synthesized from the amino acid tyrosine.
What is prostaglandin?
One of the modified fatty acids secreted by virtually all tissues and preforming a wide variety of functions as local regulators.
What is the role of the pancreas in the endocrine system?
It has a ductless endocrine portions that functions in homeostasis, secreting the hormones insulin and glucagon into the blood.
What is positive feedback?
A physiological control mechanism. A change triggers mechanisms that amplify the change.
What is negative feedback?
A physiological control mechanism. A change triggers mechanisms that counteract the change.
What is the difference between a tropic hormone and a nontropic hormone?
A tropic hormone has another endocrine gland as a target.
A nontropic hormone has something other than an endocrine gland as it’s target.
What is insulin?
A hormone secreted by pancreatic beta cells that lowers blood glucose levels.
What is glucagon?
A hormone secreted by pancreatic alpha cells that raises blood glucose levels.
What are the islets of langerhans
Clusters of endocrine cells within the pancreas that produce and secrete the hormones glucagon an insulin.
