Endocrine, urinary and reproductive drugs Flashcards
What reproductive hormones does the pituitary produce?
- Follicle stimulating hormone
- Leutinising hormone
What reproductive hormone does the corpus luteum and pregnant uterus produce?
- Progesterone
What reproductive hormone does the hypothalamus produce?
- Gonadotropin-releasing hormone
What reproductive hormone does the uterus produce?
- Oestrogen
What reproductive hormone does the corpus luteum and the pituitary produce?
- Prostaglandin
What reproductive hormone does the developing follicle produce?
- Oxytocin
What does gonadotropin-releasing hormones do?
- Stimulates leutenising hormone and follicle stimulating hormone
What does follicle stimulating hormones do?
- Stimulate sertoli cells to mature sperm
What do leutenising hormones do?
- Stimulate Leydig cells to release testosterone
What does testosterone do?
- Stimulate sertoli cells to produce sperm
What do reproductive drugs do?
- Control the oestrous cycle
- Prevent/abort
- Treating phantom pregnancy, pyometra and urethral sphincter mechanism incompetence
What is the Delvosteron injection?
- Mimics action of progesterone through DNA and changes in cellular metabolism
- Used to postpone/prevent oestrous cycle
- Repeated injections
What is the Alizin injection?
- Blocks progesterone for 7 days for mismating and abortion
- Also used for pyometra, benign fibroadenomatous mammary hyperplasia and progesterone-induced acromegaly
- 2 injections 24 hours apart
What is the Galastop oral solution?
- Selective inhibition of prolactin
- Used to treat false pregnancy milk production
What does oxytocin do?
- Causes forceful contraction sof uterus and milk let down from mammary glands
- Not used if obstructive dystocia
What are calcium salts used for?
- Hypocalcaemia from uterine inertia and eclampsia
- Injected slowly due to arrhythmias, hypotension and cardiac arrest
What do corticosteroids do for pregnant bithces?
- Mimics natural rise in production of foetuses
- Causes lung surfactant production before birth
- Used for elective caesareans
What does Osaterone (Ypozane) used for?
- Blocks testosterone binding to prostate
- Used to treat prostate disease
What does deslorelin (suprelorin) do?
- Hormone implant
- GnRH superagonist
- Chemical castrate
What does incurin do?
- Synthetic short-acting oestrogen
- Increases muscle tone so better sphincter tone for patients with urinary sphincter mechanism incompetence
What do prazosin (hypovase) do?
- Alpha-adrenergic blocker
- Dilates blood vessels and relaxes smooth muscles in the urethra and prostate
- Used for urethral spasms
What do methimazole/thiamazole/carbimazole do?
- Inhibits the production of T3 and T4
- Used to control hyperthyroidism in felines
What does levothyroxine do?
- Causes T4 to be converted T3 leading to changes in protein synthesis and enzyme action
- Used for hypothyroidism in canines
What does trilostane do?
- Blocks adrenal synthesis of gluycocorticoids
- Used for hyperadrenocorticocism
