Endocrine System Flashcards
What is an organ system?
A collection of organs, tissues and processes which carry out a specific function
What is the structure of the endocrine system?
Pituitary gland and pancreas
What is the function of the endocrine system?
Glands produce and release hormones to specific parts of the body
Give 1 structure of the pituitary gland
Antidiuretic Hormone (ADH)
Give 1 function of the pituitary gland
To release antidiuretic hormone which regulates % of water in the blood. This is controlled by the hypothalamus which contains osmoreceptors, responsible for regulating blood pressure. This means the pituitary gland controls and regulates the homeostasis of blood pressure.
Give 2 structures of the pancreas
1) Insulin
2) Glucagon
Give 2 functions of the pancreas
1) High Blood Pressure – Beta cells in the pancreas release insulin which converts glucose into glycogen and sends it to the liver and muscles
2) Low Blood Pressure – Alpha cells in the pancreas release glucagon which converts glycogen into glucose and sends it back to the blood
