Cell Structure Flashcards
What is the structure of the nucleus?
Contains DNA
What is the function of the nucleus?
To control many of the functions of the cell by controlling protein synthesis
What is the structure of the cytoplasm?
Outside nucleus but enclosed within cell membrane
What is the function of the cytoplasm?
To hold the cells organelles in place
What is the structure of the cell membrane?
Phospholipid bilayer (hydrophobic)
What is the function of the cell membrane?
To allow some substances to pass into the cell, whilst blocking others (semi-permeable membrane)
What is the structure of the mitochondrion?
Spherical organelles with double membrane
What is the function of the mitochondrion?
To carry out chemical reactions, which transform the food we eat into chemical energy for our bodies to use
What is the structure of the ribosome?
Small organelles composed of two parts
What is the function of the ribosome?
To read messages from the DNA, so it can produce proteins for the cells specialised function
What is the structure of the lysosome?
Contains digestive enzymes
What is the function of the lysosome?
To digest food, pathogens or cell nutrients
What is the structure of the golgi body?
Made up of flattened, disk-shaped sacs called cisternae
What is the function of the golgi body?
To produce membranes for the lysosomes and export proteins and carbohydrates from the cell
What is the structure of the endoplasmic reticulum?
Located in cytoplasm
